    CALYX GLASS · GOETHE BAROMETER

    Observe the Atmosphere.

Calm is a Reading, not a promise.

A hand-blown atmospheric instrument designed to reveal subtle changes in barometric pressure through the movement of water. Where traditional meteorology meets timeless design.

    ☀ ☁ ☂ ✦

    THE PRINCIPLE

    Pressure, made visible.

The Calyx Glass contains water and a pocket of trapped air, while its narrow spout remains open to the atmosphere. As surrounding atmospheric pressure changes, the balance between the outside air and trapped air shifts, causing the water in the spout to rise or fall.

    ↑

    Pressure Falls

Lower atmospheric pressure allows the water to rise within the spout.

    ◌

    The Glass Responds

The changing water level creates a simple visual indication of atmospheric pressure.

    ↓

    Pressure Rises

Higher atmospheric pressure causes the water level in the spout to fall.

    READING THE GLASS

    What the water reveals.

The position of the water provides a simple indication of atmospheric conditions. For the clearest reading, observe how the level changes over time.

    ☂

    Elevated Level — Unsettled Conditions

A higher water level corresponds with lower atmospheric pressure, often associated with increasing cloud cover, rain and the potential for approaching storms.

    ☁

    Mid Level — Variable Conditions

A mid-range level reflects a more moderate pressure state, suggesting changeable conditions and the possibility of shifting cloud, wind or weather.

    ☀

    Lower Level — Stable Conditions

A lower water level corresponds with higher atmospheric pressure, commonly associated with clearer skies and more settled atmospheric conditions.

AN OBSERVATION, NOT A GUARANTEE. The Calyx Glass indicates atmospheric pressure trends rather than providing a precise meteorological forecast. Temperature can also influence the water level, so observing its movement over time provides the most meaningful indication.

    faq

How does the Goethe Barometer work?

The barometer uses a sealed liquid-filled globe connected to an open spout. As atmospheric pressure changes, the liquid rises or falls in the spout — rising before a storm, falling in fair weather. No batteries, no electronics.

    What liquid is inside?

Each barometer is filled with coloured water. The spout is open to the atmosphere, which is what allows it to read changes in air pressure naturally.

    Is each piece truly hand-blown?

Yes. Every Calyx Glass barometer is individually hand-blown by our artisans in South Africa, meaning no two pieces are identical.

How do I care for my barometer?

The barometer is handcrafted from delicate hand-blown glass and should be handled with great care. Keep it in a stable location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes, and avoid dropping or knocking it. VERY FRAGILE
